Tampa's Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) Division recently finished a project for a new roller coaster at Busch Gardens.
In order for the Contractor to safely evacuate the area for demolition and new construction, existing utilities needed to be mapped. Using SSMC's state-of-the-art Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and electromagnetic utility locating equipment, we were able to successfully accomplish that goal. By performing SUE at the beginning of the project, our client was able to make informed decisions to avoid costly conflicts and delays. It is shown in a study done by Purdue University, that every dollar spent on SUE saves an average of $4.62 per project. Read more about the study at http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/programadmin/pus.cfm
This project was a great success, with the new roller coaster opening on time in accordance with the construction schedule.

SSMC Purchases New CCTV Unit
Due to the growing demand of Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)/Laser
Profiling Pipe Inspection Services, SSMC has purchased a second CCTV Unit.
Using CCTV, laser profilers and digital recording systems, SSMC
provides clients with color digital imagery, color digital video and internal
pipe survey data for pipes from 6 inches to 100 inches in diameter. The laser
profiler collects internal pipe survey data and is used to create pipeline
reports containing the measurement of faults and other features inside the
pipeline. This includes measurements of pipe size, laterals, water levels and other
features, as well as automatic analysis of pipe ovality and capacity up to 30
times per second. CCTV software allows seamless recording of all pertinent pipe
data easily recorded onto DVD/CD and printable table formats for report
supplementation. All video imagery can be linked to the pipes in a GIS for
seamless mapping and video review in the office.
CCTV/Laser Profiler utility inspection systems allow the
operator to record important information such as time, date, manhole/station
numbers and operating personnel. The use of this system allows SSMC to localize
and pinpoint problems such as cracks, sags, root obstructions, settlement or breaks.
The system is used to perform as-built inspections, locate service connections,
and find buried manholes, valves, etc.

SSMC is proud to be a part of the construction team for the largest reclaimed water reservoir in the United States.
Reservoir Provides Increased Storage of Reclaimed Water
March 24, 2016
Ships may be christened with bottles of champagne, but reclaimed reservoirs are christened with shots of tap water.
At least that was the good luck ceremony performed at the recent celebration for the Boyette Reclaimed Water Reservoir in Pasco County. District staff members joined other community leaders to celebrate the completion of the 500-million- gallon project. They toasted the project by pouring test tube shots of tap water into the reservoir.
The reservoir, which was cooperatively funded with the District, will provide increased storage as part of the Pasco County Master Reuse System. Covering about 80 acres, project contractors say it’s the largest reclaimed water reservoir in the United States.
It will allow Pasco County to better manage reclaimed water by storing it during the wet season when demand for reclaimed water is low and making it available to customers during the dry season when it is needed. The project also will make reclaimed water available to more potential customers in Pasco County. The reservoir is located in Central Pasco County, east of Interstate 75 and north of the Wesley Center Wastewater Treatment Facility.
Reclaimed water is highly treated wastewater and can be used for irrigation and other uses to extend our water supplies.
